I look back at those years and wish I had done more and realized all the potential I had in my hands and not wasted so much time. During my undergraduate career my social activities consumed my life. My friends were not incite to do well in school so I followed their lead. My grades were low, and I did not even care. After I graduated in 1997 with a psychology B.A. and lost touch with my old friends and old ways, I have realized that I should have spent more time doing some soul seek and thinking what it was that I wanted to do with my life. I liked Psychology but what I really wanted to do was work with children more closely. I had spent my junior and senior years involved in internships at Head Start and at a High School in a Program for young mothers. I loved my work there. At Head Start I was a Teacher Aid for the pre-school, teaching the children to read, numbers and so forth And at the High School I counseled the teenaged mothers, took care of their kids while they went to school and after the school day I tutored them with their homework. After being out of school for a while, I started to miss that. The feeling that I was teaching something those kids, the feeling that I was making a difference. I was determined to find a job in education, with my background in Psychology, how hard could it be? I found work at a residential school for runaways and abused teenaged females. It was great I was ready to go, I was going to change the world and change those girls lives. What I didnt realize is that will alone does not make me a teacher and that I needed training, a lot of training. I made a lot of mistakes in that job. This is showcased in Bring It On when basically all they wear throughout the movie is revealing cheering outfits and workout wear. I never caught on to this until reading this chapter. Also popularity is the one thing that they will throw away everything for. If your not popular, your nothing is the message young teens are access away with. These movies get away with a value like this because there is so much covering it up. Amongst the comedy, drama, and violence its hard to figure out what all of this is means. For this movie to have such a big opening I know it impact alot of teenagers and I know it influenced them to do what ever it takes to be popular. I feel like students pay more attention to what each other are doing than the school work.Young minds are easily influenced and its especially hard to erase the well put together images that these movies create. Although teenagers wouldnt openly admit that their using these characters as region models its hard to argue their not. Most teenagers actions are completely mimicking the main characters of these movies and honestly I feel like its not their fault, especially because I used to do the same thing. CINEMA OF THE IN-CROWD CONCLUSION Overall not every movie is like this but the handful that are do a lot more damage than the society realizes.Although, of course, if these movies were removed from theaters teenagers will always act sort of like this but I strongly feel that these movies dont help the situation. These movies also glorify the actions that teenagers are supposed to be learning not to do. Since these movies are teaching kids to be popular no matter what and to only intend of yourself Im not surprised about the reports of what happens in todays middle and high schools. The bottom line is teenagers need to be educated on what is right and wrong. If they are aware that you should lways try to be themselves and to help others selflessly these movies messages wont be brainwashing them as badly as they could. UNBRANDED/ DIY KIDS This branch of the book w as particularly interesting because I wasnt aware of all of the ways kids are rebelling. I thought this section was a nice destruction to the first half because it gave me hope that some students do think for themselves. It actually made me really proud that some had the courage to stand up to their own principles and faculties. I know that I wouldnt have had the guts to do something like that, especially alone.I thought it was really cruel the way they were tease by their peers. When did conforming start to be cool? I also has no idea about students going to schools with no grading system. I think this is great and I really liked the quirky concepts that the stem schooled students had. It was a very relieving section, the contrasts between the way the kids conform to other nonconformists could be its own book. FACTS An estimated 850,000 American kids or 1. 7 percent of U. S. students from five to seventeen (Quart 203) are home schooled. Or as John Holt calls it unschooling. Thes e unschooled kids are not a big part of the population and most of them never go to mainstream schools. I thought that the contrast between their outlook on schools and the Logo U chapter was very appealing. Both sides were extremes and I being in the middle realized how silly they both were being. I dont think its healthy to be either of them. I think kids should be enrolled in school because they get interaction with other kids their own age. On the other side, when you are enrolled in a mainstream school the child needs to be aware of whats going on around them and not get stressed out like the Logo U kids.I especially feel this way about unschoolers because Ive met home schooled kids and their usually out there. You can easily tell that these unschoolers arent the normal. Now this isnt bad now when their young but will an employer higher them. Since these unschoolers need to go out into the world eventually they will have to conform one way or another. Also, these days, you nee d a college degree so never going to college just because youve never gone to a regular school has its set backs when trying to find a career. Quart also explains the punk scene.I have never been into punk but Ive always liked the way they rebelled. I think that doing your own thing. if thats how you feel, is very healthy and schools should be more accepting to this. Especially when this rebelliousness only lasts during the youth years. Theres no reason to stifle something like ripped jeans, flannel, and loud music it doesnt hurt anyone. VALUES The core value that both of these unschoolers and punk kids have is to be yourself. Which is the complete opposite of the blockbuster movie value, popularity.I have to give both the unschoolers and punks credit because in a world where mostly everyone wants to be Alicia Silverstone or Freddie Prince Jr. its takes a lot of courage to do your own thing. I feel that in alot of ways its easier to just conform and not go against the grain. Quart e ntitled this chapter do it yourself kids because thats what these two groups have in common. When everyone else goes come to to school the unschoolers stay home and do it themselves. On the other hand the punks may go to school but they do their own look, their own music, their own lifestyle which completely contradicts the mainstream preppy is cool mantra.In a lot of ways these kids are going to turn out as better adults. This is because they will be better parents. I feel strongly about this because my parents were punk like in a lot of ways when they were young. When they were teenagers in the 70s it wasnt called punk, it was hippie. Hippie and punk are basically the same thing except two different generations labeled it with different names. My parents were always telling me to be myself, and as a public school student I feel this took some pressure off of growing up.I knew that they would back me no matter what. Also, when it came time for college they told me straight out you dont have to go if you dont want to. This was completely contradicting what my friends parents were saying and it took a lot of anxiety off of my shoulders when acceptance letters came in. LOYALTIES The loyalty that each group has is to their own cliques that they have created. I think this because unschooled kids look at schooled kids as different and by them not wanting to be in a clique they have created their own.Through the home schooled kids i have known, they told me how they would meet other unschoolers and would create their own groups within that. So actually they are forming what they tried to avoid. Home schooled kids in some ways can have pompous attitudes, acting like their better because they dont do what everyone else does. Ive even met unschooled kids here, at MU. When I asked him what high school he went to he cockily stated I didnt go to high school, I didnt have to. Its not fair to say that all home schooled kids are like this but its definitely out there.For t he punk kids they have their own loyalty to each other. It was very apparent in my high school because they would always walk together in the hallways and smoke cigarettes in large groups on the curb. No one bothered them but they made it very obvious they were their own group and they all identified with each other. This is something Quart didnt discuss. She made each group sound very nonparasitic but in fact they are dependent within each other. PRINCIPLES John Stuart Mills utility principle can better explain the do it yourself kids perception. The utility principle emphasizes the outcome.The outcome that both groups want is to not have a mainstream. Also stated in the utility principle is an acts rightness and how this is determined by its contribution to a desirable end. I feel that both groups have a desirable end in mind. The punk kids, especially just want to do their own thing. Their basement concerts show this because they are just trying to have fun, theirs no merchandi se involved, no celebrities, just kids in a band. I have gone to a few local shows like this and its a completely different oscillation than at a mainstream high profile band.The local shows shows the joy of music with out all of the fluff the mainstream music throws in. The outcome is more genuine than anything Ive seen at Madison Square Garden. Unbranded showed me that it is possible to live within this society and not be lured into everything you see. These kids show how you can think for yourself and do what you want. All of my life I have been a basically mainstream person. However, this book as a whole as taught me to open my eyes and realize whats going on around me. it truly is a lot more evading than I thought.At times while reading this book I felt like I was completely brainwashed. I think every parent should read this book so that their aware of whats going on around their children. Its a lot different then when my parents grew up and most of the time they dont realize the impact of these changes. I feel that the most serious lesson a parent can learn from this book is to be aware and dont be afraid to talk about it. Communication is contumaciously what kept me grounded in my household and I plan on sharing that with my children as well.

The fifth and final source of power is Personality Power or Coercive Power (Woldring, 2001) the perceived personality of the individual is the power here. An employee can only use its base of power on another employee if the other one is dependent on him. Performance factors such as knowledge, skills, abilities, quality and timeliness of work, efforts of the employee, works habits, supervisory factors, cooperation, adaptability and effectiveness of communication should be evaluated. The second perplexity in the evaluation form is that the rating scales are not specific and measurable.The scale being used is to rate an attribute is not numeral or scalar, high, low-medium, medium are being used to score against the attribute. A better approach of scoring will be to use a scale with numeric scale, the highest described as Superior and lowest as Unsatisfactory. Ano ther option of Not Applicable should also be present with all attributes. The use of measurable scale will ease the work for evaluator and he will be able to rate the employees attributes more accurately. The third advert in the evaluation form is that the performance factors are not specific.When the manager had to give rating on the engineers views, he had to take in to account the engineers positions towards his job and tasks that he is assigned to do and also his attitudes towards co-workers and manager. The factors should be more specific so that the evaluator can give the ratings to specific attribute and every attribute is taken into account. In the scenario, the manager gave engineer a low rating in the attitude factor although his attitude towards work was very serious and he completed his tasks in a very well manner. He got a low rating because of his poor attitude towards the peers and manager.The 360-degree approach to employee evaluation involves supervisor, peers, a nd subordinates into the evaluation of an individual. This approach has its own pros and cons. Many people participate in evaluating a person so it gives complete view of the performance of the person. The performance view is captured from the supervisor, peers and the subordinates, they respond as they see the persons performance. It reduces the bias of the supervisor or the manager towards an employee. It the supervisor does not likes the attitude of style of the employee, and then he might rate the employee with a lower score.If the employees attitude with the supervisor is not favorable but the peers and subordinates like the attitude of the employee, then this can be captured in the evaluation process. Many people participate in the evaluation process, so the score becomes more reliable and more accurate. The supervisor may not have a personal relation with the employee and may not know him too well to rate his personality and attitude towards work. It is also possible that th e employee have had some kind of incident with the supervisor in the past and since then the attitude towards the employee had become unfavorable.Then the supervisor would obviously rate him low in the performance factors. Most of the times in an organization, peers and co-workers know the employee better than the supervisor so when the peers will evaluate the employee, they will be able to give the ratings more accurately and their ratings will be more reliable than any others. The attitude of a person towards his sub-ordinates is also very important, this attitude can be recorded when sub-ordinates will take part in the evaluation process of the employee.And then after the evaluation, the employee can leverage his strengths according to others perception of his performance and personality. So, 360-degree approach to performance evaluation helps in evaluating the employee from many views and in recording reliable and more accurate information then the traditional forms of evaluatio ns and is not only helpful to the management to make important decisions but also is useful to the person being evaluated . There are some disadvantages too of including the supervisor, peers and subordinates in the evaluation process.One of the main disadvantages is that all the peers and subordinates may not like the personality of the employee being evaluated and may rate him very low based on his attitude and personality. The main purpose of evaluating an employee is to evaluate the performance and skills and attitude towards the work and tasks assigned to him. The co-workers and subordinates may have issues with employee being evaluated because of personality clash, and although his work is up to the mark and performance is well, but still the peers, supervisor and subordinates might give him low score on performance.There are a handful of employee performance evaluation methods three of them are top-down, peer-to-peer and 360-degree. Top-down is the most commonly used in the o rganizations today. It involves the direct manager of the employee in the evaluation process and is only useful if the manager knows his employee well enough. Peer-to-peer entails the employees of the same levels to review each other. Nobody knows the capabilities and performance of an employee better than his peer or co-worker. While it can be effective method, it can also be very unsuccessful at times.If there is jealousy among the co-workers or if there is competition then it is obvious that they will not rate each others in a reliable manner. When there are multiple managers or multiple peers of an employee then these methods prove successful. The third method is 360-degree evaluation which takes into account the reviews of peers, subordinates and the managers or supervisors. In some organizations even suppliers and customers are involved in the evaluation process. While the advantage of multiple points of views is clear, it poses some threats also.Sometimes the subordinates may not give the unbowed feedback of their managers because of the fear that manager will get to know about it. The following are the errors and biases that commonly affect the accuracy of performance evaluation. The first one is that the employees may favor the evaluation questions of their manager as they will fear that the manager will find out and so their review will not be true. The second is that the peers might not be mature enough or experienced enough to evaluate each other and they may form a cartel and rate each other well.The third example is that the manager does not the performance of his employee whom he is to evaluate because of no interaction with him, and he might just do the evaluation providing inaccurate information. In the given scenario, the evaluation form should be made more reliable and bias free and should be more oriented towards the performance of the employee rather than the friendliness and the attitude towards the co-workers. Any feedback from the individual with regards to the journey would be received by asking questions as to their experience and also asking them to complete questionnaires etc. I would contribute to reviewing support for the journey by asking the client their thoughts and feelings, and relaying these to my manager. After my manager is made aware of these then I could arrange a meeting between the client, myself, my manager and possibly a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) which will include psychology, doctors, house manager, support staff/senior support staff, occupational therapy, dieticians to take into narration everyones thoughts and feelings with regards to the journey, and to see if these needed to be altered in anyway.
